Dr Manohar Dole Medical Foundation - History

The First step A group of close friends from Narayangaon, located about 80 Kms from Pune and which was then a small village surrounded by underdeveloped and tribal areas, was keen on initiating some social activity which would provide some relief to the backward and very poor populace. However, before their plans could take any concrete shape, one member of this group. Shri. Mohan Thuse, a dynamic R.S.S social worker, lost his life in a tragic road accident. Though his demise was a great blow to his family and friends, it spurred the group to set up a charitable Eye Hospital in his memory on 26/12/1982, with hardly and resources or infrastructure available. Mohan Thuse Old Hospital (Out House)

The Eventful Journey Over the years, because of the total dedication and missionary zeal of Dr. M.K. Dole and his friends, the Hospital made steady progress and it now provides eye-care services to a populace of over 30 lacs spread over in 3 districts (Pune, Nagar and Thane). It goes even without saying that the financial support provided by many philanthropic citizens and organizations to our efforts was also greatly instrumental in this achievement. With enormous amount of efforts, needed for raising funds for this noble cause as well as putting together the necessary infrastructure and raising a team of dedicated workers, Dr.Dole has, nearly single-handedly, brought up the institution to the pre-eminent position it now enjoys in the region. His pioneering work has been acknowledged both by the Government and the Society. His total devotion and enthusiasm remain undiminished and he still at the age of 81 years has a number of plans for the growth and expansion of the organization so that it continues serving the poor and needy in the best possible manner, with the help of young turks of team. Acknowleged by Chief Minister Rs. 5 Lakh's Chimnlal Pursakar Rs. 20 Lakh's by the hands of Gowarikar

Miles to Go…. However, the journey is far from over. Lot more needs to be done to reach the economically backward sections of rural and tribal population with total and modern eye care and to create awareness in this populace about ophthalmic – health and need for donating eyes. It remains our firm commitment to reach to every member of the poor & needy rural and tribal population within a radius of 100 Kms from Narayangaon with total and modern eye care to make this a cataract-free zone.
